SUR 2150 - Surgical Technology Lab III

Credits: 2
Lecture: 0
Lab: 60

This advanced surgical technology lab course emphasizes the critical skills required for intraoperative and postoperative roles in the operating room. Students will refine their abilities to organize and maintain the sterile field, apply aseptic techniques, and manipulate surgical instruments effectively. The course also focuses on the development of anticipatory skills, enabling students to predict and meet the needs of the surgical team, thereby enhancing efficiency and patient outcomes. Key competencies include the selection and handling of sutures, medication and specimen management, and adherence to sharps safety protocols. Through hands-on practice and mock surgical procedures, students will evaluate first and second scrub roles, develop organizational skills, and apply Halstead’s Principles of Tissue Manipulation to wound management. Additionally, students will gain expertise in end-of-case procedures, including instrument turnover and terminal cleaning. This lab provides a comprehensive foundation for integrating technical precision with critical thinking and teamwork in the surgical environment. Must complete with a B- or better.
