SUR 2130 - Surgical Technology Lab I Credits: 2 Lecture: 0 Lab: 60
This course introduces the foundational principles of asepsis and sterile techniques critical to operating room (OR) practices. Students will learn proper OR attire, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, and gowning and gloving procedures to ensure a sterile surgical environment. Emphasis is placed on preoperative case management, including hand antisepsis, sterile field creation, and OR organization. Students will explore sterile zones, sterile boundaries, and spatial orientation, developing skills to recognize and correct breaches in sterility. The course also covers identifying, classifying, and handling surgical instruments and equipment, fostering competency in essential tasks across all surgical specialties. Through hands-on practice and situational analysis, students will prepare for their roles as integral surgical team members. Must complete with a B- or better.
