SUR 2250 - Perioperative Techniques and Wound Management Credits: 3 Lecture: 45 Lab: 0
This course provides an in-depth exploration of the principles and practices essential to surgical incisions, wound management, hemostasis, and specimen care in the surgical setting. Students will learn to differentiate between surgical incisions, relate incision location to anatomy, and understand the perioperative planning that informs the choice of incision. The course covers critical elements of wound healing, including wound classification, factors influencing healing, and the role of various dressings, catheters, drains, and tubes.
A key focus will be on the methods and principles of hemostasis, blood physiology as it applies to wound care and techniques for achieving adequate hemostasis. Students will also investigate wound closure methods, suture techniques, and the characteristics of suture materials and needles, developing the knowledge needed to support optimal wound closure and healing. Additionally, the course emphasizes the role of the surgical technologist in specimen care, including handling, labeling, transport, and incident management, emphasizing best practices for patient safety and accuracy. Must complete with a B- or better.
