CERTIFICATE COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY STUDENT HANDBOOK
CT PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Computed Tomography (CT) Program is a 22-week, 14-credit online program designed to prepare ARRT-registered radiologic technologists for national certification in computed tomography. All didactic coursework is delivered online, while clinical education is conducted in-person at a Trinity Health location. The program includes a full-time clinical rotation and emphasizes hands-on experience in a healthcare setting. To participate in the program, candidates must already be registered and in good standing with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and a Trinity Health employee.
GOALS
● Students will perform competently as entry-level CT technologists.
● Students will apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills in clinical CT settings.
● Students will communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and healthcare team members.
● Students will complete the program successfully and be eligible to sit for the ARRT CT certification exam.
MISSION
The mission of the Baker College Computed Tomography (CT) Program is to prepare qualified and credentialed radiologic technologists to become competent, professional, and safe entry-level computed tomography technologists. This mission is accomplished through a curriculum focused on advanced imaging principles, critical thinking, clinical experience at Trinity Health facilities, and the development of ethical and professional behaviors in alignment with industry standards. Graduates will be prepared to successfully sit for the ARRT Computed Tomography certification examination and contribute meaningfully to patient care in the field of medical imaging.
PROGRAM OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the CT Program:
Clinical Competence
● The student will perform CT procedures that meet diagnostic quality standards.
● The student will operate CT equipment and perform imaging protocols in accordance with clinical best practices.
Critical Thinking
● The student will adapt CT procedures to accommodate patient conditions or technical challenges.
● The student will evaluate CT images for quality and determine the need for repeat scans or corrections.
Communication
● The student will communicate effectively with patients using language that demonstrates empathy, professionalism, and clear instruction during CT procedures.
Professionalism
● The student will demonstrate professional behavior consistent with standards expected of CT technologists, including ethical conduct, responsibility, and accountability.
CODE OF ETHICS
The Baker College Computed Tomography (CT) Program adheres to the professional standards and ethical expectations established by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). All students enrolled in the CT program are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with these standards throughout both didactic and clinical components of the program. You can access the full ARRT Code of Ethics and Standards of Ethics document at the following link: https://www.arrt.org/pdfs/governing-documents/arrt-standards-of-ethics.pdf
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for admission into the CT Program:
● Applicants must be a current Trinity Health employee. All clinical site placements are exclusive to Trinity Health employees. Alternatively, individuals who are not currently employed by Trinity Health must apply for employment and be accepted, contingent upon successful completion of an internal background check, reference review, and drug screening. All Trinity Health onboarding steps must be successfully completed prior to the start of the CT Program.
● Upon acceptance by Trinity Health, applicants must formally apply to Baker College at baker.edu/apply.
● Applicants must meet the minimum admissions requirements of Baker College.
● Applicants must submit an official transcript from their associate degree-granting institution, demonstrating a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
● Applicants must have completed an ARRT-approved radiologic technology program and hold current ARRT certification in good standing. Baker College will verify the applicant’s active, unencumbered ARRT certification status through the ARRT Credential Verification System.
TRINITY HEALTH EMPLOYMENT
Participation in the CT Program is contingent upon active employment with Trinity Health throughout the duration of the program. Any changes to employment status may impact the student’s ability to complete the program and meet clinical requirements. Trinity Health will also verify ARRT registration and ensure the student is in good standing prior to program start.
CLINICAL REQUIREMENTS
Students must complete a minimum of 600 clinical hours at a Trinity Health location. Clinical rotations may be scheduled 3 to 5 days per week, Monday through Saturday, with shifts ranging from 6 to 12 hours. Rotation schedules will vary and may include morning, afternoon, and evening shifts, generally falling between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. Each student is also expected to complete one week of third-shift clinical experience during the program.
COMPETENCIES
To be eligible for graduation and ARRT certification in computed tomography, students must successfully complete 125 clinical competencies, as outlined by ARRT standards. This includes:
● Completion of competencies under the supervision of a certified ARRT CT technologist.
● Each competency must be signed off by a qualified technologist and scored at 80% or higher.
● Completion of a minimum number of competencies per semester to maintain satisfactory academic progress.
DISMISSAL/WITHDRAWAL POLICY
To remain in good standing and progress through the program, students must:
● Maintain active employment with Trinity Health throughout the duration of the program.
● Achieve a minimum score of 80% or higher in each course.
● Complete the required number of competencies per course.
Failure to meet these expectations will result in either dismissal from the program or the requirement to withdraw. Students who withdraw may be eligible to rejoin the program in a future cohort, pending:
● Continued employment with Trinity Health
● Reapplication and acceptance into the next cohort.
Reentry is not guaranteed and is subject to approval by Trinity Health and Baker College.
