The accelerated Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at Baker College is a specialized program designed to prepare students for a career in elementary education and teaching. Candidates for this program will bring in 30 credit hours of general education. This program provides aspiring educators with the knowledge, skills, and practical experiences needed to become effective teachers in preschool through grade 6. Candidates may complete this program in two years plus one semester. Coursework includes over 200 hours of observation and apprenticeship working with P-6 students prior to an extensive supervised student teaching experience. Upon completion of the program and the passing of required licensure examinations, graduates will be eligible to be certified by the State of Michigan in two grade bands: Preschool through grade 3, and grade 3 through grade 6.
Program Entrance Requirements:
- Background check. All courses within the program (EDU and ELM prefixes) must be completed with a C or better.
- Admission to the 4000 EDU courses: a grade of C or better is acceptable in COM 1010 and MTH 1010 (or their equivalents) as long as the student’s grade in COM 1020 and MTH 1070 is a B- or higher, along with an overall GPA of 2.9.

Prerequisite Requirements - 30 Hours
Candidates must complete or transfer in 30 hours of general education coursework to begin this program. Of those 30 credits, 3 must be from POL 1010 Introduction to Political Science, or its equivalent.
Professional Education Studies Major - 44 Hours
Elementary Education Content - 46 Hours
Semester Hours Required for Graduation - 120
This program will not be eligible for national accreditation for 3-5 years. At that time, Baker College will apply for CAEP accreditation. |
