Surgical technologists are highly skilled professionals trained to assist surgeons during all phases of surgical intervention. Surgical technologists apply their understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to the selection and organization of surgical instrumentation, equipment, and supplies. Working under the direct supervision of the surgeon, the surgical technologist ensures the operating room environment is safe, equipment functions properly, and the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Currently, the role of surgical technologists is expanding to include other areas of surgery such as labor and delivery, cardiac catheterization, outpatient facilities, and physicians in private practice.
