This course provides an introduction to the profession of surgical technology, focusing on the essential roles and responsibilities of the surgical technologist within the operating room team. Students will explore the surgical environment, including procedures, protocols, and patient safety practices. Special emphasis is placed on understanding the needs of the surgical patient, including considerations for diverse patient populations such as pediatric, geriatric, and bariatric patients.
The course also covers healthcare law and ethics as applied to surgical technology, focusing on topics such as patient confidentiality, informed consent, and the legal and ethical obligations of the surgical technologist. Through theoretical study and case-based discussions, students will develop a strong foundation in surgical case management, teamwork, and effective communication in the operating room. Must complete with a B- or better.
